Shopify development & optimization
Theme and storefront development from your design files, platform migrations, subscription and app integrations, and performance work on existing stores.
Most of my Shopify work happens on stores that already exist and already sell. The brand has a design team or a store manager with a list of things the theme should do, apps that need to fit together, a migration ahead, or pages that load slowly. I take that list and turn it into a storefront the team can keep managing on its own.
How I work on it
I start by looking at the current theme, apps and the team’s workflow, and I ask what has to stay editable without a developer. Work happens in a development theme, in Git where the project allows it, with progress reviewed on real pages and real products. When a request is better served by a theme setting or an existing app, I say so instead of writing custom code. On larger storefront projects I have also coordinated other developers and prepared documentation so the store team can take over routine changes after handover.
02Who this is for
- Brands with an in-house or agency design team that need Figma or Adobe designs implemented as editor-manageable Liquid sections, not hard-coded pages.
- Store teams on Shopify or Shopify Plus that have outgrown a theme and need a migration to a new one without losing content, settings or search rankings.
- Merchants moving to Shopify from another platform with a large or complex catalog.
- Stores selling subscriptions, bundles or configurable products where the purchase flow has to work consistently on product pages, in the drawer cart and in the cart.
- Teams whose SEO specialist or store manager has flagged performance, mobile or accessibility issues that need code-level fixes.
03Problems I solve
- Designs that never quite make it into the theme. I build sections and pages from the design files with settings exposed in the theme editor, so marketing can change content without a developer.
- Theme changes on a live store. New theme set up alongside the live one, GitHub-connected main/dev workflow, and a publish step only when the team has reviewed real pages.
- Platform migrations. Products, customers, blog posts, policies and collections moved over, filters configured, 301 redirects created for the old URLs, and training for the team that will run the store afterwards.
- Subscription and bundle flows that break between touchpoints. The subscription option appears and updates correctly on the product page, in search results, in the drawer cart and in the cart, using the subscription app's own documented functions rather than workarounds.
- Slow storefronts. Image loading order, lazy loading for below-the-fold media, splitting and minifying Liquid and JavaScript, replacing performance-heavy apps with lightweight Liquid sections, and upgrading app embeds to current versions.
- Technical SEO and accessibility work. Semantic HTML, structured data, sitemap and robots customizations, meta titles and descriptions on product templates, and accessibility adjustments requested by specialist partners.
04Typical scope of delivery
- Theme setup or migration with a GitHub development workflow and documentation.
- Custom sections, grids, sliders, tabs and collapsible content built to the brand's design and theme style.
- Product detail work: variant pickers aware of stock, variant image switching from collection filters and product cards, navigation between products in the same collection, personalization fields with surcharge logic.
- Drawer cart and cart logic, including quantity display, upsell and cross-sell placements, and subscription or bundle controls.
- App integrations: subscriptions, bundles, reviews, shipping and rate apps, messaging, analytics and pixels with custom events.
- Migration scope: data transfer, 301 redirects, store settings, payment and shipping configuration, domain connection, handover to the client's own Shopify account.
- Performance passes with before/after review in the browser and in Shopify's own tooling.
